Air France and its progress for the environment
Four years after the Grenelle Environment Agreement and the commitment agreement in the airline industry, Air France is taking stock and is pleased to have achieved its objectives in all areas under its responsibility.

The Company posts results to match its ambitions in terms of reducing noise and greenhouse gas emissions, thanks to an ongoing policy to improve the energy efficiency of its aircraft.

Decreasing fuel consumption per passenger

Consumption per passenger at Air France decreased from 3.96 litres to 3.81 litres per passenger per 100 km, a reduction of almost 4% between 2008 and 2011. The Company is aiming for an average fuel consumption per passenger of 3.7 litres per 100 km by the end of 2012.

Reducing CO2 emissions on routes between Metropolitan France and the French Overseas departments

In 2011, CO2 emissions on routes serving the overseas departments were reduced by 27% compared with 2005, thanks to the gradual replacement of the Boeing 747 by the Boeing 777-300ER, more fuel efficient.

Decreasing the noise footprint

In 2008, Air France agreed that its activity in the medium term would make noise levels (global noise energy) lower than those of 2005. Today, the company posts a 30% overall noise energy reduction compared with 2005, thanks to the modernization of its fleet.

Beyond these figures, the Company has taken numerous initiatives to achieve an energy performance to match its ambitions:

  • by reducing the mass of on-board equipment,
  • by implementing the most fuel efficient procedures in every phase of flight in collaboration with the Civil Aviation Authority,
  • by contributing to the development of a global charter and the development of sustainable biofuels without environmental or social impacts.

With all these advantages, Air France launched a world first on October 13, 2011, the most CO2 efficient commercial flight, implementing all systems to reduce noise and greenhouse gas emissions. On January 12, 2012, Air France also became the first airline partner of Bluenext, the world’s leading international environment trading exchange for carbon emissions.
